2019 Alan Wilkie Bursary

In memory of Alan Wilkie, a bursary was established in 2001 for his contribution to brass and percussion music in Queensland.

Alan was particularly interested in the development of young players.

Alan Wilkie

Alan Wilkie was the foundation conductor of Brisbane Brass and was one of the most well respected people in the brass band movement. Under Alan's guidance, Brisbane Brass was taken to great heights. Our library proudly boasts arrangements from Alan's pen. We are still performing these monumental arrangements and they prove his talent was immense. There are lots of stories where Alan is involved. He had the ability to encourage people to strive to their best. In rehearsals, he would scratch his head in annoyance and chant one of his favourites "you are not a little bit behind, you are in another building!" Alan passed away suddenly in 1999 at the age of 58. In November 2000, Brisbane Brass celebrated Alan's life with two concerts fittingly titled "The Magic of Alan Wilkie".

The concerts were held in Brisbane and one in Maryborough. Alan had such an impact on what Brisbane Brass is today that in 2000, the association decided to commemorate his valuable involvement with the "Alan Wilkie Bursary". The Bursary is open to all country brass musicians and percussionists relocating to Brisbane to further their studies. These studies do not necessarily have to be in music. What is currently offered to the winner of the bursary is $1,000 cash, free membership of the Association for 12 months and the payment of all entry fees for solo and party events at contests attended by Brisbane Brass during that year. The 2008 Alan Wilkie Bursary Winner is Tim Opstelton, a young Cornet player from Gladstone.
